This course focuses on Jose Martí’s proposal for a new Cuban nation. We will read his poems, letters, and essays and discuss the extent to which Martí’s ideas are part of the contemporary Cuban imaginary. During the second half of the semester each student will develop their own independent project about a different game-changing artist, writer, or musician in Latin America.
