Each year, nearly 50% of our graduating seniors find OCC to be the perfect start toward furthering their education. The following steps, as well as this brief video, will help our students and parents navigate through OCC's application process:

Step 1: Apply

Students interested in attending OCC must fill out the application for admission. Apply online at www.ocean.edu or in person at the registration office (call (732) 255-0304 to schedule an appointment). Click here to access OCC's online application.

Step 2: Apply for Funding

Complete a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Click here to access the FAFSA form.

Step 3: OCC Placement Testing

Prior to selecting courses, students must either take the Accuplacer test or prove they earned the right to be exempt from testing by earning a qualifying score. Click here to view the exemption requirements.

Step 4: Attend an Orientation

First-time, full-time, degree seeking students are required to attend orientation upon completion of the admissions process. Upon completion of the orientation, students can choose their classes for the upcoming semester. Please remember to bring your test scores if you were exempt from taking any section of the Accuplacer.

Preparing for the OCC Placement Test: Accuplacer

For most majors offered at OCC, students need to take English and Math courses. In order to make sure students register for the correct English and Math classes, they are required to take a placement test. The Accuplacer is a computerized set of tests developed by The College Board. The OCC Placement test includes the Writeplacer Essay, Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills (for grammar, punctuation, and spelling), and Elementary Algebra.

Students who need to take the Placement test (because they do not have PARCC, ACT, or SAT scores, or those scores are not high enough to qualify for college-level courses) can prepare for the test by practicing their writing, reading, and algebra skills and by taking practice tests. Since the test is given on the computer, it's best to practice on the computer. Click on the links below for FREE practice and preparation material for the test:

Test-Taking Tips

  1. DON'T RUSH! There's only one part of the test that's timed: the Writeplacer Essay. You'll have 50 minutes to write a well organized, well developed, and grammatically correct essay on the computer WITHOUT the use of Spell Check. You'll have paper and pencil to jot down your thoughts. All of the other sections are multiple-choice, with no time limit.

  2. Practice, practice, practice!

  3. Call the Testing Center, (732) 255-0401, if you have any questions.
