Drawing 1

Joshua Crowley "Skull"

9” x 12”, Pencil and Paper, 2021

My idea was to get a cool looking skull with cracks signifying an eye patch but with the top half of the skull being removable. I got the idea from fractured skull pictures and I just kept thinking of ways to change it up. I started drawing the outline of the skull and eyes and worked on drawing everything else out. I then fixed up everything and started shading. I shaded by scribbling on the paper and rubbing it with either my finger or a tissue. There isn’t really anything symbolic about my drawing. I only wanted to create something that I and other people would find interesting. The most difficult thing to do was getting the shading to work, which I just kept winging until I got it to where I liked it. If I started over, I would do a front profile for the skull and add a crown to the top. The piece is realistic in style and is my own due to it’s realistic yet messy nature. I love how the cracks ended up and how the shading looks.

Joshua Crowley "Stan Lee"

8” x 10”, Mixed Media, 2021

The idea for this piece was to make a drawing of Stan Lee that is half black and white and half colored through photoshop. I shaded the drawing using mostly my finger, and I used the gradient tool to make the hair. I wanted to make this piece in honor of Stan Lee. There isn’t any imagery but I want people to appreciate Stan Lee as I do. The most difficult part was getting the proportions right. After trial and error, however, I overcame those struggles. I would make the digital hair look better if I started over. It is partly realistic, but I wanted to make it unique to me by making some of it digital. I love the style of the face.
