CARES Club

The Centerville Abington School Corporation has designed a child care service which combines quality child care with educational and recreational activities. The purpose of the service is to assist working or school bound parents by providing their children with a safely structured and enjoyable environment.

The service is open to children in grades K-6 who attend Centerville-Abington schools. Care is available 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cost for those participating is minimal and a nutritious snack is provided. To contact the director, please call Angela Taylor, Director.

Extra Curricular Activities

These activities are in addition to the regular classroom activities. Criteria for participation may be developed by sponsors to facilitate manageable group size.

Student Council

The student council is made up of representatives from grades 5, and 6. Their objective is to make their school a better place to live and learn. Meetings are held after school. Members are required to have a “C” average with no “F’s” or “U’s” during each nine week report card period.

Choir

Choir is available to fifth and sixth grade students. They must come to practices, follow rules and directions, dress as assigned for programs and participate in all choir programs. Practices are during the school day.

School Play: Anne Elstro and Alyssa Kish

Students in grades 3-6 may try out to be in the annual school play. Students can also apply to be part of the props and/or sound and lights department. Students perform the play for all of the elementary students, as well as the public.

Spelling Bee (Grades 3 - 6)

Each classroom competes to see who is their top speller using a designated list of words. The top speller from each class then competes to be the top speller of their grade. The grade level champions then compete to be the school champion. This takes place each May.

Cheerleading

Girls in 5th and 6th grade may try out to participate on either the 5th or 6th grade squad. Cheerleaders cheer at both home and away games for the boys’ basketball teams.

Athletics for Elementary Students in 5th and 6th grades

Boys and girls in 5th and 6th grade may participate in the elementary basketball program. There are separate teams for boys and girls in both 5th and 6th grade. Interested students will be invited to try out for these teams during the winter months. Games are played during the second semester of the school year. Sixth grade students may also participate in cross- country, wrestling, track, and swimming at the junior high level.

D.A.R.E

Centerville-Abington Elementary 6th grade students participate in the D.A.R.E. Program. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches our 6th graders how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. 6th graders who complete the program will participate in a D.A.R.E. Graduation ceremony in January.

Flag Patrol

Students on Flag Patrol will put the American Flag, DARE flag, and the Indiana state flag up in the morning and take them down in the afternoon. This job comes with a lot of student responsibility. It requires about 10 minutes before and after school. Students are expected to perform their duties as responsible young adults.

Safety Patrol

Responsible 6th grade students are selected to be apart of Safety Patrol. Safety Patrol students are expected to perform their duties as responsible young adults. Safety Patrol help supervise crosswalks and help enforce good hallway/sidewalk procedures. Interested students must walk, ride a bike, or have their parents bring them to school. Due to time constraints, students who ride a bus may not be on Safety Patrol.

Parent/Community Involvement

Fall Festival

Each Fall, the school hosts a Fall Festival for students and the community. The Fall Festival is put on in conjunction with the Fall Scholastic Book Fair. Students can enjoy games, activities, food, and more. The event is free!

Field Trips

Each grade level goes on field trips that connect to their curriculum. Some trips include places like the Children's Museum, the Wilbur Wright Birthplace, Conner Prairie, museums, orchards, and more. This gives students a chance to see a real-world application of what they are learning in their classrooms.

More Than Words Character Curriculum

Centerville-Abington Elementary partners with the United Way of Wayne County to promote a different character skill each month throughout the school and county. Students are encouraged to use these character skills at school and are recognized by staff for exemplary character by being chosen as Student of the Month. The Centerville Christian Church also sends our school a video each month to promote the Word of the Month, and our school library holds a bookmark contest each month that uses the character word in the designs.
