Picking a Major - Research
Important note: If you are interested in a major like Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinarian or Law often these programs are not offered as undergraduate degrees, especially in Canada or the US. If you are interested in one of these programs please find out what kind of undergraduate degree you need to study to get into these programs.
This refers to your first degree at university, a bachelor's degree.Â
This is typically the first degree you will take at university. Also referred to as an undergraduate degree. Â
This is the primary focus of your study at university. You will need to take a certain number of university courses in a specific discipline to have a major. Examples can include a history major, bio/chemistry major, or engineering major.
This refers to the degrees you may take after your bachelor's degree (Masters, Ph.D., or Professional)
Prepares you for a specific profession that needs specific academic courses to have a license or accreditation. It can be a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. degree. This is usually taken after an undergraduate degree in Canada, U.S., or Australia. Typically Lawyers and Medical Doctors need professional degrees.
Taken after a bachelor's degree. Often this is taken to focus even more thoroughly on a specific subject. Usually, a research paper (a thesis) is the culmination of a master's degree. An MBA (Masters in Business Administration) is an example of a master degree.
This is the highest level of study you can do. It usually includes course work but primarily focuses on writing a thesis or dissertation that contributes original work to your subject.
A professional degree, formerly known in the US as a first professional degree, is a degree that prepares someone to work in a particular profession, often, but not always, meeting the academic requirements for licensure or accreditation. Professional degrees may be either graduate or undergraduate entry, depending on the profession concerned and the country, and may be classified as bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees. For a variety of reasons, professional degrees may bear the name of a different level of qualification from their classification in qualifications frameworks, e.g. some UK professional degrees are named bachelor's but are at master's level, while some Australian and Canadian professional degrees have the name "doctor" but are classified as master's or bachelor's degrees.
