Wyatt Penniston "Koi Fish”

8.5 x 11, Graphite and a Blender on Paper, October 24, 2021

My idea was going to be a lot of small fish on one piece of paper but then I wanted to make one big fish with a lot of detail and make it look as real as possible. After I made up my mind on the big fish and finished it, the background was so white that I added two flowers. Fish is my favorite animal and I have always thought Koi fish are the coolest looking fish.

I first started with making the outline of the big fish in the middle of my paper. After the outline I started on making the fins and putting a little detail so you could tell it was a fish. After that I started putting more and more detail into the fish at a time, starting with the fins putting all the lines on them, to making the spots on the fish look real. Doing all this with a pencil and a blending stub. After I got done with all the detail it didn't look that real, so I shaded the left side of the fish and it really brought out the fish and made it look real. Like I said, the background was to white so I added a flower and a lily pad. I was stuck for 30 minutes trying to figure out what flower I should do but then I found one. I made the outline and then bolded up the lines. After the outlining I put the final detail and shading everything on the flower and made the flower overlap the lily pad. Once again using only graphite and a blending stub.

My favorite animal is a fish because how beautiful they are and how living in water is just cool to me. The art is trying to get the audience to see how pretty fish really are but I gotta say it's hard to tell without color but that's the main point. It shows that behind all darkness are beautiful things like fish and flowers. In my eyes I see the world and how pretty it can be if you just take a quick glance at it.

The most difficult thing for it is just trying to be happy with my own art. I always think it is not perfect so I try and fix it but sometimes you make it worse. I just can never be fully happy with one of my art pieces. Like the shading on the fish I really didn't like it so I just kept messing with it until I thought it was fine. But if I actually had troubles doing something it would be with the flower. I had a lot of trouble trying to make it look real and if I'm being honest the flower wasn't the best I could do. But just shading the whole flower was hard because I never really liked it no matter what I did to it, I didn't like it.

This piece of art is realistic if you could not tell. My own personal style has always been black and white. But I pushed myself with shading, I can never get the lighting down. I always get mad while trying to make it look the best. My favorite part is the fish, it actually looks real and I took time on it so it better have turned out good.
