Savanah Meyne, “Box”

5”x5.2”x5” Earthenware Clay & Glass, 2020

I'm not sure what made me want to create this, but I needed a pot for a plant. I wasn't going to leave the edges open, but I wanted it to be different than my other piece so I decided to leave them. This proved to be a challenge because the edges didn't want to stick, or if they did, I would come to class with them cracked. Eventually I got it how I wanted it.

When painting a ceramic piece, it's always a mystery of how it will turn out. When I was painting "Box," there were reds, blues, and greens smudged around all over. When it came out of the kiln, I was surprised and very happy with how it came out.

There isn't any deep meaning to this, only that my plant can finally have a permanent home.

Savanah Meyne, “Soap Dish”

5”x3”x1” Earthenware Clay & Glass, 2020

I needed a new soap dish because mine broke. I just needed something small and cute. To fit my theme of nature, I decided to add the moons.

I first had to cut the bottom out, and then all the sides. Putting up the sides proved to be quite a difficult task, fitting them together was like a puzzle that wasn't supposed to work. Eventually with enough smoothing, I got it the way I wanted, and painted it pink because I've never painted anything pink before.

There's no meaning behind this piece, it's just a soap dish that has some moons on it.

The most difficult part was definitely putting the sides together. I had to figure out which ones were going to be at an angle, and which ones would be straight. Then when I was putting them together, some kept falling, or just looked all lumpy and gross, so smoothing it out took a long time.

This piece is Non-Objective, and it's unique because I mixed two different pinks together to create the one you see here. It has my style because of the moons, and my favorite part is definitely the moons. If I could change anything, I would've chose a different color.

Savanah Meyne, “Snake Incense Holder” -”x-”x-” Earthenware Clay & Glass, 2020

This idea came from wanting an incense holder. I was going to paint on the snake, but then I realized I could also make it, and I love how it turned out. The little diamond shapes I also thought about painting on, but I like the 3D look of it all.

I used a bottle opener from my mom to trace the shape of the dish. I then added a lip to the dish by scoring and smoothed it all out using some brushes. I then finally added the snake and diamonds using the same methods again.

There isn't really any meaning behind this piece, I just like snakes and figured that it would look cool as an incense holder. There's no symbolic imagery in my work, I just want the audience to also think that it looks cool.

The most difficult part of this was painting it. I had no idea what colors I even wanted at first, but finally settled with this baby blue that I mixed myself. When I actually started to paint it, this proved to be a difficult task because I didn't want it on the snake or diamonds. I finally gave up and just scratched the paint off after. If I could start over, I would probably change the paint color, but I'm not sure to what. I was also add a lip to the bottom so it would sit more even.

This style of art is just Non-Objective. It's unique to me because I came up with the idea and I mixed all the colors myself. I love experimenting with colors, and I'm not mad about how it turned out, it's just a little boring. The thing I love the most about this piece is how symmetrical the snake is. I also love the little diamonds because it fills the otherwise empty space with a simple yet elegant detail.

Savanah Meyne, “Mushroom Dish” 6”x4x”3” Earthenware Clay & Glass, 2020

(IDEA) First explain what your idea is. How did you get the idea and how did it evolve? Inspirations from life experiences? Another Artwork?

This is a jewelry dish. I saw a picture similar to this on the internet, but I decided to make the mushroom itself a ring holder. I really also just wanted to give my friend a good birthday present and I knew that she would like something like this.

(PROCESS) Explain your process. What tools and techniques did you use?

I began with the bottom part, and then added the small lip on the bottom and top. Then I created the mushrooms and smoothed them out.
