Kathryn Grau, “Flower set”
Mug 5x5” plate 0.5x9”, Clay, 2018
My sculpture is realism because it represents a realistic object like a flower in grass. I started with the idea to do a 3D flower on the front but originally I wanted to have more pedals and for it to be more detailed. I then shaped the mug and began coiling it to add height and width. Then I added the handle and made it thicker with a curve at the bottom to add detail. Next, I started adding the center of the flower then adding the surrounding pedals to get the flower look. Finally, I added a designed strip to the bottom to give it more of a design look. To go along with the mug I also made a plate. I wanted the set to match so I picked a plate to go along with it. I shaped the bottom of the plate then added the sides to add height to it. I carved the flower design into it so the plate could be used for eating purposes. I picked the glazed colors to give it more of a garden look to it. I love how 3D the flower looks on the mug and how the flower looks like it’s laying in grass on the plate.
Kathryn Grau “Teapot”
8”x9”, Clay and Glaze, 2018
My sculpture is realism because it’s a functioning item. You can also use this everyday. I began with the idea of doing a lace texture around the outside of the teapot. I then realized it would be difficult to form so I changed it to 3D textures. I began by building the base of the teapot and building up. Next, I added the handle and the sprout. Then cut a hole in the top and added my lid. I also put a line of coil on the inside and under the lid so it would hold up. Next I found stamps that added a 3D look to it. I also cut out hearts and placed it around the top of the teapot. For my glazing I made the base blue then for the stamps made them a different color so they would stand out. I would change the placement of the stamps because I don’t like the way they lineup. I love the structure of the teapot because it’s very strong and a good shape.
Kathryn Grau “Spider-Man”
6x9”, Plaster, Screen, Acrylic Paint, Slip Paint, 2018
My mask would be realism because I am recreating a popular superheroes mask. I wanted to create a plaster gauze mask and I had the idea to create a superheroes mask. Spiderman is my favorite superhero so I researched pictures of his mask to get the best outline for it. I began putting plaster over my face mold and focused on adding extra to the mouth to cover it because spiderman's mask doesn’t show his mouth. When I was done plastering it I began painting the base of my mask red. I painted the outline of his eyes black and put a screen over his eyes to match the look of his eye protectors. I used slip paint to paint the lines around his face so they would look more 3D. I would redo the lines because they aren’t straight and began to smear. I love how realistic it looks.
Kathryn Grau “Pumpkins”
1.25x1.5”, Sculpey Clay, 2018
I created a realism sculpture because there pumpkins which is a type of squash. I originally wanted to do soap carving but then changed to sculpey clay since I didn’t have soap. I looked up ideas for this and found pumpkins which I thought were very cute and wanted to create. I found four oranges, blue, white, brown, and green clay. First, I rolled out the clay so I would be able to create it into the right shape. I then added circular eyes and added blue to give them color. Next, I added a stem and leaf to the top. I then took a noodle to add a smile and lines to give it the texture and look of an actual pumpkin. I did this three more times to create four pumpkins. I would change the detail of the pumpkins to make it look more smooth. I love how they turned out and how cute and childish they look.
