Garrett Smith "Baseline"
4" by 5", Painting Paper, 2024
Description: This dog is based on a photo that I saw online, the photo is copyright-free. I sketched out the dog by eye. I then proceeded to paint the black outline, then paint the rest to the according colors.
(IDEA) I got the idea from wanting to start on drawing/painting something simple so a dog drawing/painting came to mind. I wanted to draw a dog because i like dogs and i find them pretty simple to express in art.
(PROCESS) I first sketched out the dog by hand using a copyright free image from google, I did not trace. After I had the sketch I then painted all the lines black and filled in the nose of the dog. I then painted in the lines using the appropriate colors for a dog.
(SYMBOLISM & ICONOGRAPHY) The artwork means a dog is sitting waiting for its owner. I want the audience to think about why the dog is sitting and waiting.
(ARTISTIC GROWTH) Sketching out the dog was difficult for me because I messed up the proportions at times and had to restart. I kept trying until I got the proportions for the dog right. If i started over I would change the details of the dog, I would make the whole paintng more detailed.
(VISUAL VOICE) The style of art is realistic. What makes it unique to your own personal style? Its unique to my style because of its simplicity and how similar it is to a real dog. What do you love about it? How simple the painting is.
