 "Out of place"

9.5x12x7.6

Paper, Marker, Watercolor paint, Acrylic paint, scissors, pencil, Exacto Knife, Ruler.

2023

My Ideas was to showcase what it feels like to be out of place in the world to feel like you don't fit in no matter where you are. I got this idea from my own personal feelings and experiences in the world because I have never felt like I have fit in within the spectrum of people. It also originated from a poem I had wrote a few months ago talking about myself via the metaphor of a dandelion which spurred on the entire idea of a dandelion added into this. I started this project off by sketching a self-portrait of myself in my own personal drawing style on a thicker paper with pencil and then using a fine tipped pen to outline the entire drawing. After that I got out some watercolor paint and began to do a base coat of solid colors onto it. After that dried I used slightly darker versions of all of the original colors to provide a shaded effect to it. Finishing off the coloring for my self-portrait I used white paint for the highlights in the eyes and other places. I then used an exacto knife to cut out a slightly jagged edge around the entirety of it before sitting it aside. I then began on the more realistic people by looking around at certain small features of the other people in the room. I used different aspects of everyone to attempt a realism drawing of a girl. I then shaded the drawing and cut it out with smooth accuracy while still leaving it in pencil. After that I repeated the process again just with the guys to make a culmination of features in pencil. Following all of the realism parts I began on the more intense cartoony style of the other two characters which is more like my style just more exaggerated. I went about a more dynamic pose for her that looks like she is almost laughing while using sharp lines for her body. From there I used a thick sharpie for the outline a vibrant saturated markers for the coloring of her. After that I cut out a jagged white outline around her. Next I went with a more introverted keep to herself pose for the other cartoon gilr and used softer bubbly lines. I then outlined her in black sharpie and used black and purple marks to color her and then shade her before cutting her out to reflect the more circular way I drew her. I then proceeded to use a ruler and a picture of a hallway I had taken to create a background with paint. I used the rough outlines to create a sort of look of a hallway full of lockers and then made a secondary paper with just white ground for the floor. I then proceed to use duct tape and strong paper to have the characters stand up right almost like paper dolls. The artwork takes on a meaning of not fitting in. It is mostly supposed to reflect my own experience and thoughts and feelings. I used different mediums and stylistic approaches on each separate element of this piece to reflect the sense of nothing quite fitting together. I want someone to look at this and feel understood and connect with my artwork. The symbolism of the dandelion, weeds, and flowers in the front is to sort of reflect the same ideas displayed with the characters but in floor form. The dandelion also doesn't quite fi in with the weeds or flowers, its an in between state most times on peoples perception of it.  The most difficult part of this project for me was the realism aspects, I have never been good with realism and I tend to steer away from it all times. Still I wanted it to be an element in my artwork so I persevered and tried my hardest to make the characters as realistic as I could. I did this by continuing to work on them even when I wanted to give up and just cut the idea out. I also wasn't very proficient with the exacto knife for my self portrait leading to messier cuts so Id decided to incorporate that into the whole theme and feel of my work. If I could start this whole project over i think I would plan out the sizes and traits of the characters more so it's more diverse and cohesive. This style of art is a combination of many different degrees of realism and cartoon elements. The middle ground of these two is my own personal style complete with massive eyeliner and bigger eyes that are more wide open. I love all of the variation that I have achieved with this work of art, the symbolism I was able to portray through it, and the depth of it.

 "A Blossom of Hope"

8.4x6.5

Paper, Sharpie, Phone (IBIS Paint X)

2023

My idea was to have a girl kneeling down in grief and pain with dead leaves behind her and a small glowing flower in her hair being shined on by a ray of sunlight. I got this idea from wanting to symbolize a feeling I've had before. I first sketched out the girl on a sheet of paper and used a sharpie to make the lines more definite and darker. I then took a picture of it and transferred it to my online drawing app. From there I traced the drawing and began to block in colors, then I used a specific brush the shade and highlight the blocks of color. I then got a new piece of paper and sketched out tons of different leaves before transferring them to my drawing app too. From there I colored many of the leaves multiple colors and manipulating their sizes and shapes with a tool before putting them together to make the background. Then I added the girl on top of the leaves and used an overlay of dark purple and black to make the picture darker. I then Used a yellow overlay for the beams of sunshine and highlights on her hair, skin, flower, and eye. The dead leaves symbolically represent sadness, while the flower in hair in victorian flower language means hope. It means that a girl trapped at rock bottom living in sadness just needs someone to shine down some kindness towards them for hope to bloom. The most difficult part of this artwork was probably getting the lighting just how I wanted it, I played around with it for a very long time before getting what I wanted. A struggle I overcame was that this was originally going to be on paper but I messed up the coloring on my sketch and had to use the light table to transfer the sketch to another clean paper before I decided to just do it digitally. I think what I would change if I started over would probably be the placement of the head because I don't think it looks entirely natural. This style of art is my own style which is a little cartoony and mostly filled with flowery symbolism. It makes it unique to me because it reflects my own experiences. I love the differnet way I did shading in this project, it is more sketchy and rough then what I usually do.

 "Purity of Youth"

12x9

Paper, Pen, Watercolor Paint, Acyrlic Paint, Scissors, Modge-Podge, Hot Glue

2024

My idea was to depict a little girl picking flowers to show the innocence and purity of youth. I got this idea from looking at different meanings of flowers. I first drew the little girl and then got out the acrylic paints. I started with painting her skin and mixing some red with water for the blush. I then started on her dress mixing differnet yellows to add mroe depth to it. Then I did the details of the face and sandals before messing around with her hair for awhile lighting and darkening the oranges a few times. After that I cut her out and set it aside to work on the background. I just blocked in brown/tan color for a path with watercolor paint and did genric green on the rest of the paper. I then started to add depth to the rest of the background and added purple flowers to the grass. After that I sketched out a lily of the valley flower and then used watercolors to paint it, before going on to make a whole bush of them. After all of that I drowned everything in a layer of glossy modge-podge, with the water color aspects it made it bleed together a little and added a dreamier feel to it. After all of that I used hot glue to put it all together and the flower in her hand. Lily of the Valley flowers represent purity and innocence in victorian flower language. I wanted to symbolize this with the little girl picking the flowers and everything bright around with her. She is smiling and full of life while everything around her is very dreamy and flowery. The most difficult part of this for me was putting on the modge-podge and making sure it didn't smear the water color too much that it was just a jumble of colors. I overcame this by being very careful while appling it and doing it thicker then I usally would have. If I were to start over I think I would change the color of her dress because I don't love the yellow. This style of art is my own cartoony style, its unique to me because I have curated a specific style over the years. What I love most about it is how bright it is.

 "Foolish Devotion"

10.5x7.8

Paper, Pencil, IBIS Paint X

2024

My idea was to showcase how sometimes people put their friends or people they care about on a pedestal and kinda worship them as a perfect being when that is really foolish. I got this from my own experiences and doing this several times myself in my life. I first sketched out the marble statue, before transferring it onto my drawing app. From there I traced the pencil lines and left it alone to figure out the other figure. I first drew a guy but I then decided I wanted it to be more about friendship to better reflect my experiences. From there I drew the girl kneeling and also transferred it to my drawing app. I colored in the girl with a more modern look before going onto the statue. I used greys to create the marble look and resized it from the original sketch. From there I took a free image from google and manipulated it so it looked more cartoony. I then Added both the girl and statue overtop of it and situated it how I wanted it. I then Drew the two flowers and also added them to the piece. I then used filters to lighten the piece up more and added a white vignette around it to make it seem more holy. This artwork symbolizes how sometimes friendships can become one sided where one person doesn't care and the other practically idolizes the other and is entirely devoted to someone who doesn't even care back. I feel like this is a pretty common occurrence in friendships. The flower blossoming near the girls feet is a geranium and means folly and stupidity, while the one the girl set by the statues feet means eternal love and devotion and is a. Heliotrope The marble has no chips or moss on it to depict her supposed perfection, she also isn't even looking at the girl. The most difficult part of this for me was probably the flowers, I usually only draw people so when I have to do anything else I struggle. I overcame this by printing out a picture of those flowers and being able to sketch a rough outline of it so it looked like the actual flower. I don't think I would change anything if I started over, this turned out well. This style of art is cartoony and my own style whcih you can tell by how I draw the characters. What I love the most about this is how well I was able to make the statue to look lifeless and like actual marble.

 "Garden of Death"

12x9

Paper, Pencil, Acrylic Paint, Scissors, Hot Glue, Fabric

2024

My idea was to have the angel of death picking skulls like they were apples from a withered tree. I got this idea from deciding on doing a black rose for my last flower which signifies death and watching a scene in a T.V. show where they were in an apple orchard. The first thing I did was sketch out the tree and the girl who represents angel of death. I then got out the acrylic paints and started to paint her skin white, I then used a gradient of black and grey for her arms and contour on her face. I then painted her hair and dress shades of dark grey and black before doing the details of the face. I then mixed a dull brown and painted the tree, it then went over it and shaded and added detail and textures to it. After that I cut out the girl and the tree and painted another sheet of paper completely black. I then painted another sheet of paper a swampy green and then went in with a sharpie to add extra details to the grass, tree, and girl to make everything more definite and give it some extra style. I then went and bought a fabric with a black rose design on it and added it over the black background. From there I glued on all the other aspects and added a small white halo above her head. The artwork is supposed to be the angel of death picking skulls from a tree to symbolize her choosing which people are going to die. I want people to see the beauty and indifference of death, it's not an evil being taking them or their loved ones away but rather and angel tending her garden. The black rose fabric in the back in victorian flower language means death. The most difficult part of this painting was probably trying to get everything to fit together how I wanted it to. I overcame this by making several different copies of the grass and tree before I landed on ones that I liked. I don't think I would change anything if I were to start over. This style of art is more symbolic and my own personal style which you can tell by how I shade, how I draw the girl and the more cartoony aspects of it. I loved how I used the sharpie on this piece if turned out very well.
