Painting II

Bri Clark "Sunset" Finish Line Painting

5x5 in, Acrylic, Watercolor, 2023

I wanted to make a smaller painting, and incorporate brighter colors. I wanted to make another sunset, so I began to combine acrylic and add water to make water color. Then I decided I wanted water below it, and to try and show a small amount of water. I was looking at my acrylic colors and also wanted to try and do trees, adding depth and shading to them. This is a finish line and an updated version of my baseline.

Bri Clark "Ocean"

16.5 x 20 in, Acrylic, Watercolor, 2023

For a while now, I've wanted to paint the ocean. A lot of times the ocean is percieved as somewhere sunny and aqua marine colored water, which a lot of times it is. In fact, when the ocean is calm, it is one of my favorite times at the beach. But I wanted to think about what the ocean is like when it hits rocks on the shore, and the sky is more gloomy with wispy cirrus clouds. I started by painting the rocks, adding black and grey and red highlights and shading. Then, I added crashing white waves with spirts of water coming over the rocks. I then painted the sand a deep grey and mushy color, with small white waves running across it, retreating back to the ocean. The waves in the back get higher and deeper, a pthalo blue color. My favorite part about this painting is the waves crashing against the rock. If I could go back and fix something, it would be where the rock stops and there is a layer, because the water looks like it is almost slipping into a crack which was not my intention.

Bri Clark "Reality"

8x10 in, Acrylic, Watercolor, 2023

My idea for this painting is to be an ocean, with a turtle in the center, who is eating a plastic bag that looks like a jellyfish. This painting resembles littering and how plastic is invading our oceans, and affecting marine life. This is named "Reality" because it is reality. Thousands of animals are found dead because of eating plastic and other harmful things in their environment. My favorite part about this painting is the lighting and the small blue water rims. I think the lighting coming down into th eocean looks realistic and I really like it. The most difficult part was adding detail and shading to the turtle, and adding the plastic bags, and making them look like they are gliding in the water.

"Grey"

12x12 in, Acrylic, Watercolor, 2023

My idea for this painting was to show hands of a biracial person, such as myself. I often struggle with having to fit in and being judged for not showing my "black culture" enough, as well as my caucasian culture.

 Bri Clark "Diamond Eyes"

8x10 in , Acrylic, Paint Pen, 2023

This was my first painting, and it was one of my four ideas. I wanted to use metaphoric imagery for the identity portrait idea. I really liked looking at paintings where the skin was shaded and highlighted by non-skin colors. It also evolved by added streaks in the skin, shadowing, and a swamp green background that latches onto the face. My process was to start by sketching out the face in pencil. I wanted the face to be asymmetrical, and to look childish, not having much 3D imagery. I then started mixing colors onto my art palet and thinking about contrast. I decided on yellow, orange, purples, blues, and reds to give the face the most contrast. This art just resembles something i've always wanted, which is lighter eyes. I've been told I have pretty eyes, but I've always wanted colorful ones instead of brown. The silver streaking down the face resembles the washing away of that desire, and being comfortable with myself.  The most difficult part about this painting was mixing the colors to corralate yet be different all at once. I would say this art is abstract. I love that it has many colors and a lot of things going on, and I like he shading on the left side of the face.

Bri Clark "Drifted"

8x10 in, Acrylic, Watercolor, 2023

My idea for this painting was to show connection between two people that are forced to be apart. What I like about this painting is that the people remain anonymous, making the idea open to almost anything. It could be a boy and a girl, woman and a man, woman and a woman, man and a man, friends, sisters, brothers, grandparents, anything, just two people connected, yet drifted. To begin this painting, I really wanted to add a lot of color, make it look spiritual and futuristic. I have been really facinated in space, and so I wanted to create a unique background. First, I sketched the hand and the person, and then I added the rays coming from the corner of the painting. I also added white splotches to represent stars. The most difficult park was adding tons of colors and shapes, yet still being able to make out a hand and a person. To me this art is surreal.

Bri Clark "Connected"

8x10 in, Watercolor, Acrylic, 2023

My idea for this painting was to keep the people anonymous, just like in "Drifted". This painting represents two people who are connected, but are separate and individual. I got this inspiration from an article I read about conjoined twins. They are attached to each other, but are completely different people. I started by sketching the bodies, and adding the shading and highlighting. I then created the background by using a sponge dabber and dipping it repeatently in water and acrylic paint. I have also really enjoyed the space background, and wanted to try this again. I wanted to add small accents of color in the back to represent galaxies and space clusters to make it look more surreal. My favorite part about this painting is how the faces of the people morph and connect into each other. The most difficult part about this painting was sketching the bodies, and adding colors into them to create shadowing and light.

Bri Clark "Paradise" Baseline Sketch

12 x 12 in, Watercolor, 2023

For my baseline painting, I wanted it to be simple and paint what I love, which is the beach. I started by making the ocean water with a light blue watercolor paint, as well as the beach sand. Then I created the sun and the sunset colors, and added the yellow reflection onto the water. I then used sharpie to make the umbrella and two chairs on the beach, as well as the palm trees.
