Amaya Tallman “The First Night”
9x12, Graphite, 2021
My idea for this drawing was capturing my feelings of one wonderful night I had. I based my drawing off of a picture my friend took of me. I used a light box to trace my printed photo onto my paper. I used different graphite pencils and erasers to shade and add highlights to my drawing. I also used blending sticks and tissues to blend my graphite. When I drew this art piece I wanted to capture how happy I was and draw my feelings about my night. I want people to be able to see the happiness on their faces. My biggest struggle was drawing the eyes of both of the people. I overcame this struggle by changing the open eyes into closed eyes, which was easier to draw for me. If I were to start over on my drawing I would shade the lightest things first and work to the darker shading instead of the other way around. I attempted to draw this realistically but I added my own style by drawing a more unrealistic face. I love how happy both of the faces look in the drawing.
