Ana Henningsen "Boot"
9x13, Acrylic, 2024
I did not really have any idea of what to do to start so I just started to sketch out something random and came out with this.
First I started with just sketching it out on paper and then once I thought I had a good idea of what to do I lightly sketched it out on the canvas and then started with doing the background. Then moved on to the main color of the boot. I ended up switching the colors on the background and the boot around so the boot was darker than the background. Then I went in with an even lighter pink and did the details on the boot. And used the left over paint from the boot to do some detail work on the background.
To start with I didn't have a plan at all but I was looking at old pictures and I would show animals in the fair and my boots were a dark pink with light sparkly pink detailing. So I decided to recreate that.
The only thing I changed about this painting was after painting the main part of the boot and the background I didn't really like how it looked so I ended up repainting it and switching the colors so the background was lighter than the boot. If I could start over I think might make the detailing on the boot better.
I think that this is realistic and what makes it unique to my own personal style is that this is made based on something in my childhood. My favorite part about it is that the colors are almost exactly to what it was in real life.
Ana Henningsen "Houses"
9x13, Acrylic, 2024
I didn't really have an idea of what I wanted to do but I wanted to incorporate bright colors. But I had recently watched Mama Mia and I noticed how the houses were all super close together and looked like they were stacked. But they all were boring and white so I sorta did the same thing here but instead of it being boring and white I used a lot more color.
I first just sketched it out in pencil on the canvas and then went in a started to paint it random colors. I tried not to do the same colors right next to eachother. And then I started to paint the windows and add the border to all of it.
This is just a simple piece that I recreated from something I saw in a movie and decided to make it more colorful instead.
The most difficult thing would be to do the border of the windows in the white and all the small details. I find it harder to do smaller details then big ones. So if I could redo this I would try harder on the white borders and also add some greenery in there to make so more color.
This painting leans towards abstract surrealism rather than being non-objective. It depicts stylized buildings and windows, which are identifiable objects, but they are distorted and simplified in a whimsical, almost dreamlike way. I like that the colors are bright and not at all like what they buildings are like in the movie Mama Mia.
