Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act protects students and employees with disabilities from discrimination based on disability. For eligible students, a school-based team may develop a Section 504 Plan that identifies the accommodations, supports, or services the student needs to access school programs and activities.
Conditions that may qualify a student for a Section 504 Plan include diabetes, seizure disorders, ADHD, and severe allergies. This is not a complete list, and having a medical diagnosis does not automatically mean that a student is eligible. Eligibility is determined individually by a knowledgeable school-based team after reviewing relevant information about the student and the impact of the condition at school.
If you believe your child may need a Section 504 evaluation or plan, contact the Section 504 Coordinator at your child’s school or the district’s Supervisor of Exceptional Learning at 629-201-4801, extension 10108.
Students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and receive special education services are also protected under Section 504. Because their disability-related needs are addressed through the IEP, they do not need a separate Section 504 Plan.
