The Campbell County School District Social Studies Department emphasizes higher-level achievement through a blend of curricular design and educator autonomy. We have done extensive work on our curriculum as a department from the student-centered approach as the structure to our design. The quality of design and questioning has been benefited by the time and effort put forward by Karin Hess and Jan Hoegh. The success of our students depends heavily on the quality and efficiency of our goals and the work done through professional learning communities and professional development.
As a district, we have definitive categories of assessments across all levels:
Diagnostic:
Analysis based assessment that tests all students' strengths and weakness as a scaffolding to later assessments.
Formative:
To quickly inform daily instruction by providing specific, immediate and actionable feedback. Assessments may change instruction from moment-to-moment based on student understanding and ability in relation to identified learning targets. These assessments are teacher-generated and informal, allowing for responsive instruction. The “check up” not the “autopsy.”
Interim:
Benchmarks and monitors progress by providing multiple data points across time.
Summative:
Evaluates learning or a program with a single cumulative data point.
