A Rendle IB History Overview.mp4

The aim of history in the Diploma Programme is to explain trends and developments, continuity and change through time and through individual events. The course is concerned with individuals and societies in the widest context: political, social, economic, religious, technological and cultural. The topics include:

  • The move to global war (Japanese, German and Italian expansion 1931-1941)

  • Authoritarian states (Hitler’s Germany and Mao’s China)

  • The Cold War: Superpower tensions and rivalries (20th century)

  • Aspects of the history of Asia (HL only, focus 1939-1992)

The study of History requires commitment. You need to be interested in the subject matter: you need to enjoy reading, discussion and argument.

Other methods used include role-play, studying video recordings and archival material, as well as writing notes, preparing essays and undertaking an historical investigation. Strong English language and essay writing skills are essential.

The study of history aims to develop skills which will equip students for an ever changing world but are also highly valued by a wide range of international employers from the government to the media, banking to journalism and industry to public services.
