Welcome to a new school year! To ensure we are set up for our year, please consider submitting this year's program fee as soon as you're able.
Students in the Intermediate and Advanced Bands are required to become proficient on a large variety of percussion instruments throughout the school year. In order to be successful, students must have access to the following materials:
A Stick Bag including: Snare sticks, rubber mallets, yarn mallets, timpani mallets.
These are available as an "all-in-one" package from reputable band retailers! An Educational Pack stick bag includes:
timpani mallets, marimba mallets, xylophone mallets, and snare sticks. These need to be kept in a stick bag which must be labeled with the student’s name clearly on the outside. All of these can be purchased in one clump at most of our locally recommended music stores (Portman's, Kirkwood's, and Music & Arts) and will vary slightly be location. A link is also provided below if you wish to order online.
A REAL FEEL practice pad (for at home use). We have invested a lot of money in providing a class setup of practice pads for use in the band room to eliminate the amount of setup required at the start of class.
A bell kit (for at home use). This bell kit will not travel back and forth to school. Bell kits are required for students to have access to at home to ensure that they can practice the required performance proficiencies on their own, outside of needing access to the band room. This is also how percussion students complete video performance assessments outside of class. Wind instrument performers have individual instruments in their possession, so percussion performers need them as well! These can be rented through a local, approved, music retailer- or can be purchased for a lower one-time cost in most instances.
Access to a metronome/tuner to have at home (there are also many free apps available for mobile devices)
A folding music stand for practicing at home. These will occasionally be required for performances during the year as well.
If you wish to purchase mallets separately or replace components, there are a large variety of options. Please refer to the links on this page for specific/recommended sticks and mallets. YES! You may notice that a pair of sticks can range fairly expensive... it's IMPERITIVE that students understand that these are not toys and act responsibly and respectfully to all equipment. They better they are taken care of the longer they last!! We often have instances where sticks and mallets are snapped in half and the heads fly off from improper use.
Full List & Purchase Links:
Stick Bag (there are many options that will fit your student's personality, but this is the most generic example- please feel free to allow your student to pick one out that fits their unique style! There are many available online.)
Practice Pad (these are the same ones we use in the classroom and are ideal), please purchase the 12" NOT the smaller size options.
Bell Kit (please note your student DOES NOT NEED a snare drum at home. If you want to purchase a bell kit that includes a snare drum, please understand that exceeds the expectation. Additionally, the "music stand" that mounts on the bell kit is NOT appropriate for our reading materials and a separate folding music stand should be owned outside of this practice kid. Also, the practice pad that comes with the kit is OKAY, but not the recommended practice pad. Students do NOT need a "tunable" practice pad. THE ONLY recommended Bell Kit brands we suggest are Liberty, Pearl, Yamaha. Please do not simply purchase an off brand kit off Amazon.
Students are required to bring the following items with them to band class, DAILY. Student's upkeep of materials and preparation for class are considered part of our "rehearsal etiquette" standard. Student's ACTIVE participation is tracked throughout the year.
Grade-Level Fundamentals Book- Provided by the band program/ Mrs. Norwood (RevTrack Program Fee)
6th Grade: Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician
8th Grade: Foundations for Superior Performance in Band
3-Ring Binder, with name CLEARLY labeled on the front cover
5 Tab Dividers (Warm-Up, Technique, Rhythm, Vocabulary, Repertoire)
Page Protectors
Pencils and Erasers- Please ensure students have a healthy supply of pencils and erasers!
Mrs. Norwood is only able to provide students with certain materials because of our annual Band Program Participation Fees. Thank you for having your participation fee paid for via RevTrack so we can get these items in your students hands (in addition to other vital operational resources) to use throughout the year!
Students are provided their band banders in 6th grade only (or upon initially joining the SIMS Band Program). After students have been provided their initial set up, they are expected to have an identical binder set up with them daily in their continuing years. If binders become misplaced or destroyed- it is the student's responsibility to replace it and re-create an identical setup.
