Welcome to Band at Greenbrier Middle School!
Joining band in the 6th grade is an amazing decision that will lead to a lifelong journey of discovery, expression, and joy, directly as a result of the music-making that will take place over your time in band and beyond!
The only time a student can enroll in Band at Greenbrier Middle School is in the 6th grade. 7th and 8th grade band classes cover more advanced material that build on skills developed in 6th grade Beginning Band.

Beginning Band/Grade 6 - This performance-based class focuses on basic instrumental skill development and music reading. The goal of this class is to teach students the proper way to hold and play a brass, percussion, or woodwind instrument with the characteristic tone quality of the instrument. Students can elect to play their instrument of choice with the band director’s approval and recommendation. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required.

Quality instrument and associated maintenance supplies (Reeds, valve oil, etc.)
Habits of a Successful Beginning Band Musician (Our method book. Purchase after instrument selection)
Three-ring binder for music storage
Pencils - every day!

In the first few weeks of school, students will be tested for instruments to discover which will be the best fit for their musical journey. In the 6th grade, student options include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. After a solid understanding of fundamentals is mastered, some students will have the opportunity to transition to other instruments in order to properly balance the desired instrumentation for the band.
Information will be sent out in early August regarding how students may obtain an instrument. It is CRUCIAL that quality instruments are obtained so that students may experience the most success in their musical studies. Local music stores (Portman's Music, Music & Arts) offer rental options which are highly recommended.
