COE holds 4th Wandering Words Wandering Worlds
The College of Education (COE) recently held the 4th season of Wandering Words Wandering Worlds (WWWW), an innovative literary platform inaugurated during the pandemic. This initiative curates literary works through thematic clusters, encouraging participants to view them as interconnected narratives rather than isolated pieces.
Designed to foster vibrant discussions among educators, instructors, literary enthusiasts, and writers, WWWW bridges geographical divides and nurtures a global literary community. The project is part of the COE’s Language Studies and Literary Arts Production and Practices (extension program) under CBSUA-Calabanga.
The season opened on December 23, 2024, with a session focused on Sonnets to a Gardener by Trinidad Tarrosa-Subido, Inside Job by Edith Tiempo, Order of Masks by Virginia Moreno, and Hometown by Luis Cabaquinto. Participants first engaged asynchronously with the texts and later joined synchronous discussions to explore how these works interact. Mr. Edwin Breva, Jr., Chair of BSE, served as the resource speaker, guiding the participants in unraveling the intertextual dialogues among the readings.
On December 26, 2024, the second session, titled, Crossing the Divide, featured El Hijo by Horacio Quiroga, How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife by Manuel Arguilla, and First Lesson by Philip Booth. Discussions touched on themes of parental love, familial acceptance, mental health, and the metaphorical significance of water as a unifying element. Participants also shared personal reflections on "first lessons" from significant relationships. Adding an international perspective, Mr. Ken Romero, a foreign English teacher at Taichung Municipal Taya Junior High School in Taiwan, and Mrs. Mary Krisma Cabrador-Diso, an ESOL teacher at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College in New Zealand, shared insights into the teaching of literature and language in their respective countries. Both resource speakers, alumni of COE and the Laboratory High School and BSE Program of COE, provided valuable context on global literary education.
The final session, held on December 27, 2024, focused on Cathedral by Raymond Carver, Ode to a Lemon by Pablo Neruda, and Soledad by Angela Manalang-Gloria. Mr. Jenly Balaquiao, alongside Indonesian students from Saint John's Catholic School under the class of COE alumna Ms. Kaye Allyzon Villante, facilitated the discussions. This session emphasized Ernest Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory, illustrating how much of a narrative lies beneath the surface, as seen in Cathedral. It also examined how small details in works like Neruda’s Ode to a Lemon can reflect greater truths and affirmed the importance of addressing societal taboos in literature, as discussed in Soledad.
Through its thematic approach and global outlook, WWWW continues to offer a distinctive lens for engaging with literature, fostering appreciation and critical dialogue that transcend borders.
