Performance Scales

Making the Case for CB Performance Scales (pp. 84-91)

One of many validation strategies we outline in the book is the use of performance scales to guide instruction, as well as assessment and rubric development.

Developing performance scales requires more time and information than we can squeeze into a tweet. We encourage you to read over this section (pp. 84-91), review the examples, and pose your questions to us.

Three benefits we point out are: guiding instruction from least to more complex learning; flexible enough to assess the same competency with different (but comparable) assessments; and offering a new approach to grading – using evidence of learning at lower-higher steps in the performance scale to determine a grade.
