As I sat down to create this song, I just asked, "Who am I today?" Thinking about what we're doing as an orchestra program and the great things I'm hearing from students, the word that came to my mind was "inspired."
We were inspired by a photo of Elle to create this music. The day after Halloween, she got a lollipop stuck in her hair! "It was such an innocent, sweet moment that I just had to get a picture of it," said Mr. Black.
We tried to recreate that sense of innocence and silliness with the music by using mostly acoustic sounds. As we built a palette of sounds, we decided to have the marimba resemble the lollipop and the electric guitar resemble Mr. Black, the dad.
You'll hear how the music starts simply and innocently. After a few cheers, the lollipop theme comes in and all is well. Very suddenly, the music shifts to a minor key because as you can see in the picture, the lollipop got stuck in Elle's hair. After some time, you'll hear the electric guitar come back in because, of course, Mr. Black helped her get the lollipop out of her hair.
