Designing Culturally Responsive Teaching (1.5 hours)
Culturally Responsive Teaching (Gay, 2000; Ladson-Billings, 1997) is not a new concept; however, educators across the nation continue to struggle with its implementation, moving from concept to classroom practice. In this workshop, educators will review the tenets of culturally responsive teaching while positioning culture as a cognitive scaffold. We will think critically and reflect deeply about funds of knowledge (Gonzalez, Moll, & Amanti, 2005) and cultural frames of reference to better understand how learners, including ourselves, connect to concepts and make sense of the world. Examples of culturally responsive teaching, and tools to elicit students’ cultural frames of reference will be shared.
Research indicates that bilingual education is the most effective pedagogical model for English learners. However, many school districts still adhere, explicitly or implicitly, to English-only or English-dominant instructional practices. This session will focus particularly on strategies and tools to design instruction that includes multilingual materials and primary language support. Various tools and pedagogical practices will be shared and analyzed.
Modern Classrooms Project
The Modern Classrooms Project is a nonprofit that empowers educators to build classrooms that respond to every student’s needs. They have developed a research-backed instructional model grounded in blended, self-paced, mastery-based learning that leverages technology to foster human connection, authentic learning, and social-emotional growth. The Modern Classrooms Project supports educators in implementing this model in their own classrooms through their Free Online Course.
Watch this short video to see their model in action. I am excited about the opportunity to use this course to build more differentiated, student-centered classrooms.

2026 PaTTAN Literacy Symposium: From Evidence to Action
The 2026 PaTTAN Literacy Symposium: From Evidence to Action is a three-day virtual professional learning series designed to deepen educators’ understanding of literacy research and translate that knowledge into effective classroom and systems-level practice. Grounded in the Science of Reading and the Science of Learning, the symposium moves participants through a purposeful progression—from understanding why evidence-based literacy practices matter, to strengthening how reading systems and instruction are designed, and finally to making those practices stick in daily instruction.
Across the three days, participants will examine the cognitive and linguistic foundations of literacy development, analyze instructional and assessment practices through a research-aligned lens, and apply evidence-based strategies within classrooms, schools, and MTSS frameworks. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of literacy science, practical tools for instructional decision-making, and strategies to support lasting improvement in student literacy outcomes.
