September and October
Students will learn the routines and procedures of the Library.
Students will check books out - to take home.
Students will learn how to care for their books.

Character traits - Respect and Trust
November
Students will learn about different aspects of fiction - focusing on characters and setting.
Students will learn how to evaluate works of fiction using a story map.
Students will read stories focused on the November character trait of THANKFULNESS.
December
Students will be identifying the characteristics of nonfiction.
Students will be developing their questioning skills using the words - WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW.
Students will using the CAPTIONS and HEADINGS in books to find the answers to questions.
Our books this month will focus on - polar bears, reindeer, and the tooth fairy!
The character trait for this month is kindness. We will read stories and discuss how we can be kind.
January
Happy New Year!
Students will be identifying the characteristics of nonfiction.
Students will locate and use the TABLE OF CONTENTS and INDEX in books to find the answers to questions.
Our read aloud books this month will focus on - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., pets, penguins, and snow.
The character trait for this month is responsibility. We will read stories and discuss how we can be responsible.
March and April
The character trait for March is Perseverance. We will read stories with characters who never give up!
The character trait for April is Citizenship. We will read stories with characters who are good citizens.
Our read aloud themes will be homes, careers, manners, and MONSTERS (sweet ones)!
Students will be identifying the characteristics of nonfiction. These features include captions and headings.
May and June
During the month of June we will be exploring Fairy Tales! Students will be using their "fairy tale alarms" to collect evidence from stories. They will then evaluate if the story is a fairy tale. We will look for the following elements:
Good and evil characters
Fairy tale words - once upon a time / happily ever after
Magic
Talking animal and objects
Three and Seven
Royalty
Setting - castle or forest
