Mathematics T4

Numeracy: In strand Maths this term we will be exploring transformations. This includes exploring reflection (flip), rotation (turn) and translations (slide). Children will learn to find reflective symmetry in shapes and patterns using a line of symmetry or mirror line. They will look at rotational symmetry, using language of clockwise and anticlockwise and half and quarter turns.

At the end of the term we will explore the mass and capacity of objects. Children will need to know the units of measure for each, e.g. kg and l. During shopping and cooking times at home, it would be helpful for the children to observe how these units are used and to be involved in using these measures.

For the majority of the term we will be developing our understanding of fractions. Students need to recognise and find fractions of shapes and numbers. For further detail on the progression of skills please go to the T4 document on the Numeracy page.

It is important to emphasise daily basic facts revision. Even if children have achieved their basic addition and subtraction recall, it is beneficial to review these weekly. Setting time challenges is a good way to keep the interest in these high, e.g. http://www.hoodamath.com/mobile/games/mathtimedtests.html. Please remember, in NZ at this stage, we do all addition and subtraction horizontally rather than in vertical form.
