Something that is new that we wanted you to know is that all K-3 students will be receiving a library bag on the first day that they check out library books. Our 4th and 5th grade students will be given the option of taking a library bag or not. This is a heavy duty plastic bag that says "I Love Books!" on it. It will also have a label with your child's name, teacher, grade level, and class group. Students will be taught during their library class that their library books should be kept in these bags when they are not reading them. The plastic bags can be placed in their backpacks if this is easier than carrying it separately and will help to prevent water damage to the books from spilled water bottles. Students should try to have their library books and bags with them each time they come to the library with their classes.
If they lose or damage their bag and need a replacement, there will be a charge of $1 for the replacement bag. You can send the $1 in with your child to bring to the library on their class library day.
Students in kindergarten and 1st grade are able to check out one book at a time and students in 3rd-5th grade are able to check out 2 books at a time. Sometimes, older students are given assignments that require library books. These books can be checked out in addition to their normal checkout limit. Books can be checked out for 2 school weeks until they are marked as overdue.
In the elementary library we do not charge fines for overdue books. However, students and families should be prepared to start paying fines once students reach middle school.
If a book is lost we ask that families cover the cost to purchase a replacement copy for the library collection or purchase the replacement copy themselves and send it in to the library with their student.
Our library isn't just here for our students, but it is here for you too! Parents can check out library materials, as well. My plan is to have one after-school event a month starting in September for families to be able to come into the library to preview our new books, checkout library materials, and spend some quality time with their kiddos in the library. You are also always welcome to send me an email requesting books that I can checkout to you and send home with your student.
