Fourth Grade Core Curriculum
The big ideas in grade 4 include: developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing an understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.
In 4th grade, students deepen their reading, writing, speaking, and language skills, preparing them for more advanced learning. The focus is on reading a variety of literary and informational texts with increased understanding and critical analysis. Students learn to identify key ideas, summarize passages, and draw inferences supported by evidence from the text. They explore elements like character development, settings, plot, and how an author’s words can create mood or tone.
Writing skills focus on creating well-structured opinion essays, informative reports, and creative narratives. Fourth graders learn to organize their ideas clearly, use evidence to support their points and develop their writing style. They also begin conducting short research projects, gathering information from multiple sources to answer questions or explore a topic.
