Class 505
Fifth Grade Core Curriculum:
The big ideas in grade 5 include: developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, developing an understanding of multiplication and division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions), extending division to two-digit divisors, developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations, and developing understanding of volume.
In 5th grade, students build on their reading, writing, speaking, and language skills to become more confident and capable learners. The focus is on reading both fiction and informational texts with increased comprehension and critical thinking. Students learn to identify themes, summarize key details, and make inferences using evidence from the text. They also explore figurative language and understand how an author’s perspective influences a story.
Writing in 5th grade emphasizes crafting clear and organized opinion pieces, informative essays, and creative narratives. Students learn to support their ideas with facts, reasons, and evidence while developing their voice and style. Research skills are developed through short projects where students gather, evaluate, and present information from multiple sources.
