Basic Utensils

  • The word utensil comes from the Latin "utensilia" meaning "things for use".

  • A utensil is a tool you can hold in your hand and use around the house.

  • an implement, instrument, or vessel used in a household and especially a kitchen.

Kinds of Basic Utensils:

Graduated Measuring Cup

  • These are usually made of glass or plastic and are used for measuring liquids.

Individual Measuring Cup

  • These are usually made of aluminum, stainless steel, or plastic used for measuring accurately the fractional part of a cup (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3)

Measuring Spoon

  • These come in sets of (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon and are used for measuring small amount of ingredients.

Rubber Spatula/Scraper

  • A rubber or plastic scraper used to remove sticky ingredients from cups and sides of bowls and push batter into baking pans.

Spoon, Fork and Knife

  • These utensils are very useful for many purposes during the baking process.

Wooden Mixing Spoon

  • Choose spoons that are most convenient for you to use.

  • These some in different sizes to suit your method of mixing.

Spatula/Metal Turner

  • Used to easily lift or flip food in a pan

Straight-edge Spatula

  • Long flat spatula with a straight edge used for leveling or frosting cakes.

Tong

  • A type of tool used to grip and lift objects instead of holding them directly with hands.


Ramekins

  • Are circular glazed dishes that are normally used to bake and serve individual portions of dishes like puddings, crème brĂ»lĂ©e, souffles, custards or other desserts.

Baking Pans

  • Used to contains the batter or dough while baking

Wire Whisk

  • Used to blend ingredients smooth or to incorporate air into a mixture, in a process known as whisking or whipping

Chef’s Knife or French Knife

  • A Chef's knife, also known as a cook's knife, is a cutting tool used in food preparation.

Paring Knife

  • Is a small, short-bladed knife, used for intricate cutting, peeling, mincing, and dicing. The blades are simple, sharp, and precise. Ideal for:

Bread Knife

  • Bread knives are used for cutting bread.

  • The serrated blades of bread knives are able to cut soft bread without crushing it.

Sharpening Steel

  • The serrated blades of bread knives are able to cut soft bread without crushing it.

  • It is this repeated occurrence that requires a blade to be refreshed with sharpening steel as often as possible.

Can Opener

  • Is a mechanical device used to open tin cans.

  • A kitchen utensil is used to open or remove the top from a metal can.

Kitchen Shears

  • Also known as kitchen scissors.

  • Intended for cutting and trimming foods such as meats.

Rolling Pin

  • A piece of cylindrical wood with or without handles and is used to remove the sticky ingredients from cups and sides of bowls and push batter into baking pans.

Grater

  • also known as a shredder,

  • a kitchen utensil used to grate foods into fine pieces.

Chopping Board, Color Coded

  • A different chopping board is needed for each type of food that is used.

Colander

  • A device used for draining liquid from food

Strainer

  • A kitchen device that is most used to strain liquids away from other ingredients but also to occassionally sift fine ingredients away from larger ingredients.

Chinois

  • It is used to strain custards,purees,soups, and sauces, producing a very smooth texture. It can also be used to dust food with a fine layer of powdered ingredient.

SIFTER OR FINE MESH SIEVE

  • This is usually made of wire mesh or a fine plastic screen that sieves dry ingredients. Flour is usually sifted before measuring to incorporate air into it.
