Te Whare Tapa Whā is a Māori model of health created by Sir Mason Durie. It compares well-being to the four walls of a whare (house). Each wall represents a different part of our health. If one wall is weak, the whole house is affected.
Taha Tinana (Physical Well-being) 🏃
Looking after your body through exercise, good food, sleep, and rest.
Taha Hinengaro (Mental & Emotional Well-being) 🧠
How you think, feel, and manage your emotions.
Taha Whānau (Social Well-being) 👨👩👧👦
Your relationships with friends, family, and community.
Taha Wairua (Spiritual Well-being) ✨
Your sense of purpose, values, and connection to something greater.
Improving your physical health doesn’t just help your body; it also strengthens the other walls of your whare.
Helps Taha Hinengaro: Exercise and good sleep boost your mood and reduce stress.
Supports Taha Whānau: Having energy and confidence makes it easier to join in activities and connect with others.
Strengthens Taha Wairua: When your body feels healthy, you can focus better on your goals, values, and things that give your life meaning.
