Each of the 5th grade teachers will be attending Y Camp and staying both days. In addition, we will be taking along over 22 parent chaperons to help us out. These are parents of current 5th graders (and some of them went on the trip when THEY were in 5th grade). Along with the people from Hartford, the YMCA camp has it's own staff of mostly college students who will be leading some of the different activities that we do during the day. These Y Camp staffers are usually camp counselors who come early to Y Camp to help out and then stay for the start of the summer camping
During the day, the campers will be split into 11-13 different groups with two or more parents guiding the groups to the different stations. Students will be supervised by at least two adults at all times while they are at camp.
The first day at camp the students will eat the sack lunches that they packed. The following dinner, breakfast and lunch we will all eat in a dinning hall. There will be hot meals served to everyone "family style" with the opportunity for a salad bar, bread, peanut butter, fruit, etc for some of our pickier eaters. Students with special dietary needs will have another option if they cannot eat the meal that is being provided. No one has ever complained of going hungry at Y Camp, there is food for everyone!
The YMCA camp has three rings of cabins. The girls/women will all be in one ring of cabins, and the boys/men will be in the 2nd and 3rd rings of cabins. Each cabin holds roughly 14 people (give or take) and each cabin will be occupied by at least two adults (either teachers, parents, or a combination of both). The cabins come with bunk beds and mattresses, so students will want to bring sleeping bags and pillows. Some cabins have bathrooms while others share a shower house with girls on one side and boys on the other.
Parents need to drop off all medication at the Hartford Office before the trip. Please hand it to our school nurse personally and she will make sure she understands all of your child's needs. We will have our school nurse on site who will be available to hand out medication and deal with minor injuries.
No, every student can go whether their family can donate money or not. We won't leave anyone behind for money reasons.
Students will bring all of their supplies with them and ride their normal bus routes to Hartford. Once in their classrooms, the teachers will organize everything, check attendance, and then board buses that will take everyone up to Boone.
On the last day, students will board the same buses at Y Camp and be driven back to Carlisle. They will be dropped off by the elementary with enough time to catch their normal buses home or walk if they're a walker. If the student lives in Hartford who normally walks home, then a separate bus will collect all those students from Carlisle and bus them back to the school in Hartford where they can walk home like they normally do.
No special rides or transportation will be needed except if families decide to drop campers off in Hartford on the first day or pick them up from Carlisle on the last.
