Children develop language skills better in interactive rather than passive contexts. Below you have an interactive storytelling activity. Teachers or parents can read the questions to the children and encourage them to respond using the correct words and/or gestures. Here is the link to the original Edpuzzle activity.
Listen to the story and try to answer the questions.
As well as language skills, critical thinking skills can also be developed during the storytelling by pausing the video and asking the children to predict what's going to happen next, how they think different characters are feeling or why things have happened. Connections between events in the story and the children's own lives should also be made to engage them and make the story more meaningful to them. (If the children's language skills in English are not strong enough to do this in L2, these questions could be asked (and of course answered) in the pupils' first language or by using the sandwich method. This will help them to better understand and enjoy the story.
Example questions:
Is the last egg going to hatch? How are Mother and Father duck feeling now? Will Ruby eat? How is Ruby feeling now? Where has Ruby gone? Why did she go away? Why did she come back? What are the ducklings eating? Do you always like eating your food? Can you swim? Have you ever flown up to the sky? Have you seen any ducks in Zaragoza? Where do they live? Have you ever seen a bird's nest?
