Before you get started on this unit of work, you will need to introduce the topic and the concept of spring. The easiest way to do this is to take the children outside to the playground or to the school garden if you have one and look for signs of spring (or a spring hunt). Who can see a flower? Who can see an insect? What about some green leaves on the trees? You could encourage the children to go for walks with their families and take photos of some of the things they see to bring in for 'show and tell' at circle time. Use the children's photos for a class display on 'spring'.
You could also draw their attention to the changes in the weather by keeping a weather record. Is it cold today? What's the temperature? Is it sunny or windy? Draw their attention to the fact that the days are getting longer too.
At the beginning of this unit of work, you could also use a KWL chart to find out what your pupils already know about the spring and what they would like to find out.
