A simple sentence is a sentence that contains one finite verb.

Example: He was running with great vigour and strength.

Sophisticated Example: Every day of his training he was running with great vigour and strength along the steep escarpment beside the house.

Good sentences add more detail. Sophistication comes from adding details in particular ways such as using prepositional phrases (e.g. in, on, under etc.) or participle phrases phrases (begin with words ending in -ing or -ed).
