Compound Sentences

Good sentences add more detail. Sophistication comes from adding details in particular ways such as using prepositional phrases (e.g. in, on, under etc.) or participle phrases phrases (begin with words ending in -ing or -ed).

Compound sentences are made up of two or more sentences or clauses each containing a finite verb and joined by a conjunction.

Conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

Example: He was running with great strength and vigour but he still did not win the race.

Sophisticated example: He was running with great strength and vigour, convinced about his ability to win but despite his resolution and commitment, he still did not win the race.
