Expedition Hook

During our hook week, we found something strange in our classroom…some footprints! We spent the morning trying to work out where they had come from and who they belonged to. Some of us quickly worked out the they must belong to an animal, like a bear! We were a little bit scared to come in to our classroom when we worked this out because we thought the bear might still be in the classroom! We spent the morning hunting for the bear and searching for clues.

After looking for clues, we looked at the footprints up close. We also looked at some other types of footprints and used our think, pair, share protocol to talk about our ideas. The right hand footprints created a lot of discussion as we all had lots of different ideas...

The next day, Miss Welburn had checked the cameras from that night - as suggested by Aubree - and this is what we saw! We couldn’t believe that an actual bear had been in our classroom! We used our investigation skills to work out where the bear had been, and then drew a map each.

During our hook week, we focussed on the story ‘The Everywhere Bear’ and looked at the question, ‘How do we care for bears?’ We begun by making predictions about the story and then read the story to find out what happened. We learnt that the children had a class bear, who went home with one person every weekend, but one weekend, the bear fell out of the bag! The bear went on a bit of a journey down a drain, into the sea, then he was hauled into a fishing boat, taken to a shop, thrown into a skip, flown through the sky, and he ended up in the library where the children found him again! We loved reading about the Everywhere Bear!

The next lesson, we looked at how bears are made in factories. Miss Welburn and Miss Ferguson then showed us that we had our very own Everywhere Bear for Crew Welburn and Crew Nursery. We worked together to carefully stuff his stuffing into his arms, legs, head and tummy, then we added in his hearts for love and kindness, and finally, we velcroed him up. We even had a little Carcroft School t-shirt for him so that he really is part of our crew!

We continued our hook week by creating pieces of art that represented bears. We had three different activities: fork bear where we used forks and paint to print bear faces; bear masks where we used paper plates to cut and paint bears; and handprint bears! Take a look at some of our hard work using these skills!
