Chapter 8

The Writing Process

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ON-DEMAND & PROCESS WRITING?

On-Demand Writing is a one-time, immediate draft that mimics the situation of an AP test or short-answer test response in a content area. On-demand writing expects that a student takes into account the constraint of time in planning and writing. In an on-demand writing situation, teachers do not provide step-by-step instruction of the writing process. On-demand writing functions as a snapshot of an individual student’s skills.

Process Writing involves pre-writing steps and multiple drafts to produce a final publishable product. Students develop stamina by learning and refining the skills necessary to develop a comprehensive product. Process-writing occurs across disciplines.
