Choosing the right school

How do I choose colleges to apply to?

  • You might fall in love with one college but there are always several colleges that would be right for you. Your list will evolve and won’t be finalized until senior year!

  • You should be in the driver’s seat, it’s ok to listen to others’ opinions but the choice is up to you in the end.

  • Your choice must be based on your interests. What’s right for someone else might not be right for you.

  • Avoid misleading (and potentially inaccurate) publications, rankings and websites such as US News & World Report or College Confidential.

  • Talk to your parents in advance about their parameters around an acceptable selection.

  • Finances should be discussed with family. Keep in mind that the price tag is usually not what you pay.

  • Avoid the “bumper sticker” mentality- names and selectivity are not everything! Consider retention rates, graduation rates and job placement rates instead.

  • Be realistic. Look at the data carefully and consider acceptance rates when determining your odds of admission.

  • Consider the distance from home and what feels most comfortable.

  • Visit when possible. Do not wait until senior year or until after you apply to visit colleges for the first time. (Most campuses are still closed for in-person visits so take advantage of virtual tours and information sessions for now!)

  • Consider the factors that are essential to your happiness.

  • Check out your intended major if you have one and look at the depth or breadth of courses offered in that area of study. Compare programs at individual colleges. Research the entrance requirements for your intended major.

  • Explore the balance of study, activities, and social life that fits your needs.

  • Explore the physical structure or lack of structure of the college campus. (Closed campus vs. open campus).

  • Take a look at campus communities, clubs, internship opportunities, and study abroad programs.
