Gap Year

What is a gap year?

Many students choose to take a break between high school and college which is commonly referred to as a "gap year". Some students choose to work during their gap year while others take advantage of numerous travel and volunteer opportunities. If you are thinking about taking a gap year here is what you need to know:

  • It's recommended that you still apply to colleges even if you know you're planning on taking a gap year. Ask each college what their policy and process is around students taking a gap year.

  • After you have received your admissions decisions in the Spring of your senior year, you will need to select the college you wish to attend after your gap year. Once you've made this decision, contact the office of admission at the college and let them know that you are planning to take a gap year. They will walk you through the process but be prepared to send your deposit to the college by May 1st. This deposit is non-refundable but will hold your place in the next year's class.
