The most important part of the Exhibition is not the final presentation, rather it is the process that students go through. Grade 5 students will be creating a learning journey to share with you.
Action Evidence and Reflection
For those of us who have chosen to take action before the 28th of April, we are now adding our action evidence and reflections. Would I choose the same action again? If so, is there anything I would do differently? What worked well? What challenges did I encounter and was I able to overcome them?
Reducing food waste at CA
"Everybody put their food waste in the correct trash can. I wasn't expecting that, but that made me happy. The amount of food collected helped us to self-reflect "
Viviane
Starting a Well-being Club
"Everyone enjoyed the coloring section and they were able to join our club. They said they were feeling happy and wanted to join again"
Hyemin
Raising awareness
"I informed people of when they will be able to receive the list of shops in Kobe that sell organic food or shops that don't use plastic or use less plastic."

Planning & Taking Action
We are in the process of planning/taking Action. On the day of the PYPX, we have the option to share our plan and take Action AFTER the PYPX. Alternatively, we can plan and take Action NOW, and share what we did on Thursday 28th of April. In the photos above, one of our classmates took action by conducting an experiment on different types of energy. Here, she is sharing the prototypes she made with Grade 4.
Presenting Our PE Game
This week, we presented our games to our peers. The purpose of creating these games were to develop our collaboration skills within our ‘Thinking Groups’, and deepen our understanding of the ‘Big Concept’ connected to our topics.
Continuing our Primary Research
We continued collecting data from our online surveys and conducted more interviews with experts.
Individual Artistic Expression (Optional)
Finding primary sources for our research and have been conducting interviews!
Meeting with our mentors and getting feedback on our progress so far.
Exploring different ways to present our Digital Presentation.
Moved into our Thinking Groups and beginning our research. Here is how we are feeling now!
"I'm feeling really excited to learn more about my topic and I'm really happy with my Thinking Group because they are going to motivate me a lot and I'm really excited to meet my mentor!"
How we arefeeling during the first phase of our Learning Journey!
"I'm feeling pretty excited because I think I know what I'm going to pick and I'm pretty confident about it. But I'm a little nervous because I might not finish it in time. So I'm happy and excited but a little nervous."
"I'm feeling a little excited and a little bit nervous, but I have an idea because I want to do something that connects to life below water."
The first step on our Exhibition Journey is thinking about what we are passionate about. Our students began by watching the video 'Alike' and thought about how their passions motivate them to take action.
Linking Passions to Global Issues
Our Grade 5 students will link their passions to a UN Sustainable Development Goal. They will think about world issues and how they could use something they are passionate about to help to make the world a better place for everyone.
PE - Element
In PE, students work within their thinking groups to modify a game to help them deepen their understanding of the 'Big Concept' connected to their topics, as well as relate them to local and global issues.
Artistic Expression - Music
Students work with Ms. Go to express understanding of their topic. They have used various programs and applications to build musical pieces, songs, song lyrics, instrumental and backing music.
Artistic Expression - Visual Arts
Grade 5 students work with Ms. Tangala in the Art Studio to create two artworks. One is a whole class collaborative piece of art to capture the essence of one larger collectively decided world issue.
The students create one small canvas that will come together as one large mosaic. The second is an individual piece connected to a Digital Media unit of learning. The students digitalize their drawn self-portraits and manipulate them with text and images that connect to their overall PYPX topic using photoshop.
Grade 6 Guest Speakers
Grade 6 students shared their PYPX experience from last year. Here is some advice they offered to our Grade 5's:
It's not a good idea to have paragraphs of writing on your slideshow presentation, talk to your slides, don't write everything
Include your audience in your presentation by asking them questions aloud or on the chat
Know your information because you have to talk about it
You have to practice your time management
Be ready when it's time to present
Use a script
Choose a topic that you're passionate about
Make a bibliography to show your information is true and accurate
Mentor Meetings
Our students have been meeting with their mentors a couple of times a week. They are helping to keep them on track by asking them questions and helping them to plan their next steps in the exhibition process.
"In my mentor meeting, I learned that friends are important when researching. I was stuck on research and my friends were able to help me."
"My mentor is helping me to think about what I need to do next"
Research
Students came up with essential questions which guided their inquiry to find more information to explore more about their lines of inquiry. Students then organized their notes as they used several different sources or media and compared the information that they found.

Action
Another step on the Grade 5's Exhibition Journey was to choose an action that they could take that connects to their passion and world issues. Action can be something that is conducted during PYPX or after PYPX!
Reflecting on the Journey and Goal Setting
Ms. Brown's lesson's this week focused on how we spend our time before and after school. Students reflected on their priorities and due dates for their components of PYPX
Our Secondary School Drama Teacher, Ms. Art visited Grade 5 this week to share advice and techniques for presentations.
"Radiate your confidence!"
"Be intentional with your hand gestures"
