A quick update from our Year Round Staff with a bonus of our favorite ways to spend time outdoors in the spring!
We've all been working together to get Camp ready for the summer, and now the summer is finally here!
This spring, we have been busy! In addition to hosting different school groups and reservations, we've had a packed Onas calendar. We held an alumni reunion, older camper weekend, and a volunteer workday! In June, we were busy getting staff ready for the summer. It's been a joyful and busy spring, and we're happy to tell you about our highlights!

“Each fall, I try to transplant a tree or two - then in the spring I water it a lot and talk up Camp to it. I think it encourages the trees to grow.”
This year, working with our school groups was probably my favorite part of Spring. Mostly because I was thrilled to see students and teachers return to Onas for overnight programs. For many of our schools, Onas overnights haven’t been possible since 2019 so it was extra special this year. My two favorite activities to facilitate are the Zipline and “Extreme Stream” (formerly “stream study”). Each holds unique challenges, especially for first-timers, and I really enjoy sharing those experiences with people.
Springtime for myself and my husband usually means tons of mowing and weed whacking, but lack of rain this spring has minimalized that chore. It also means filling the barn with fresh cut and baled hay to last through next winter for feeding the horses. It is a hot, dirty and itchy job, but I'm quite sure the horses appreciate it! May and June also means short trips to two of the oldest running horse shows, Devon (1896) and Upperville (1853). Both are very unique and steeped in tradition and we make a fun weekend getaway before camp season is underway.
This spring, I've spent much of my free time helping friends and loved ones start their own gardens. I love growing plants, especially the ones you can eat! I started over 150 tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and greens from seed inside, and most of them have made it to their homes in various gardens across Philly and the suburbs. Gardening is way more fun with others, and I can't wait to spend some time in the Camp Onas garden this summer, too.
This spring, I've been enjoying some 1v1 basketball (me vs. myself) out on the Blacktop. I love a good challenge and there's nobody better at beating me than me. Once I work up a good sweat, sometimes I hop in our gorgeous pool and stand there 'til I get cold again. When I'm not being my athletic self, I like to take a frolic through the buttercups that are in full bloom around Camp. I like to think I've got a pretty good life.
This spring was my second season of playing soccer with a rec league! We made the play-offs for a second season in a row. I’m new to playing soccer and it’s been a lot of fun to try a new sport and make new friends. My team is taking a break during the summer, so I’ll probably switch to pick-up during the week and pickleball over the weekends.
"Woof!"
