Apart from Distinctiveness and Condition, there are additional weights which feature in the SGBA which represent risk whenever an enhanced or new habitat is proposed, hence, are also termed ‘risk multipliers’. These weights are the ‘Difficulty of creation' and ‘Difficulty of enhancement’ risk multipliers. As terms imply, ‘Difficulty of creation’ applies to proposed new habitats while ‘Difficulty of enhancement’ to existing ones.
Figure: Schematic representation of the various variables and risk multipliers featured in the SGBA:
Composite scores resulting from the products of variables contribute towards Biodiversity Net Change or net HBU change (except those marked ‘*’ which are for planning and review purposes only). Habitat loss reduces HBU but is compensated by either creation or enhancement, potentially leading to net biodiversity gain.
Example calculations for habitat creation and enhancement are presented in following sections.
