Residency Year Overview
Avance mentors are the anchor to our residency model. Mentor teachers are integral to providing:
an intentional gradual release model
explicit guidance and mentoring to the resident
the use of data to determine adjustments for the gradual release of the residents
The mentor teacher in the residency year receives intentional professional development for mentoring, engages in an observation and coaching cycle with residents, and includes residents in all planning and school-led PD.
Benefits of becoming a mentor teacher:
$500 Stipend in June of 2024 for being accepted into the mentor pool and attending 2 days of mentor PD
$3000 Stipend for hosting and mentoring a resident for the 24-25 school year (Stipend for additional additional time you are investing to ensure the development of residents)
Continuing Education Units (through LMU)
Release Days during resident takeover days
An additional adult in the classroom 3 days a week
Garanteed Sub Coverage- All Residents will have Sub Permits

Minimum of 3 years of full-time teaching + a Clear California teaching credential
Commitment and Expectations
Commitment to mentoring and supporting a new teacher into the profession
Engage and collaborate with other teachers in all Mentor Teacher Professional Development
Commit to at least 1 full year of mentoring a resident (24-25 school year)
View resident as a partner and learner
Ability to observe and facilitate coaching based on classroom observations and student data
Ability to make thinking and process visible to Resident for classroom management, planning, and content implementation and reflection
Demonstrate evidence of Culturally Responsive Practices in teaching as well as mentoring
Application Timeline
Avance mentor teachers support the disruption of inequitable access to the traditional teacher preparation model by providing high quality mentorship and partnership to residents. They invest in themselves, the residents, and the larger school community to provide our students high quality education from day one.
