WHAT IS GENERAL MUSIC?

General Music is a means of helping ALL students understand the basic principles of music such as beat, melody, harmony, tempo, etc. Using the First Steps in Music, Conversation Solfege, Orff-Schulwerk approach to teaching music, we focus on fostering creativity, conveying musical knowledge, and evoking and cultivating musical skills through singing, movement, body percussion, improvisation, and playing pitched (Orff xylophones) and un-pitched (drums, shakers, etc.) instruments. Recorder instruction begins in 3rd grade and continues through 5th grade. Depending on the grade level, the general music program culminates with either a music sharing or concert, during which the children demonstrate some of the performance skills they have acquired during the school year.
