BEGINNING BAND -
Band is a large multi-instrument performing ensemble. Our beginning band offers the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion (with 1 year piano experience or permission from the band director). Percussion requires both untuned (drums, cymbals, accessories, etc.) and tuned percussion (Concert bells, marimba, xylophone). Percussionists are expected to practice both instrument families which involves reading rhythms and pitches on a music staff.
Our Beginning band is intended for students with little to no background in instrumental music. We only ask for enthusiastic, involved students with a growth mindset and a love of music.
Band curriculum includes basic music theory, instrument fundamentals, posture, breath control, and performing ensemble etiquette.
To participate in the band program, a $150.00 donation is requested and greatly appreciated. This non-refundable donation is voluntary and not required. The District relies on these donations to be able to continue to offer high quality extra-curricular programs of this type for all of its students. This donation includes one after-school rehearsal per week, a band method book, and highly qualifed instrument specialist. (NOTE: Parents are expected to provide black pants (full length), black socks (above the ankle) and black shoes for performances.)
Please note that these ensembles are separate from the after-school enrichment programs at the school sites, and require a full-year commitment.
Band rehearsals begin the week of October 9th.
Where to get an instrument?
Band students can rent, buy, or borrow a band instrument. We do have a limited supply of district instruments which are available to loan.
INSTRUMENT LOAN
The Band Program has bell kits (percussion), trombones, trumpets, clarinets, and a small number of flutes available for loan. An additional $50.00 NON-REFUNDABLE DONATION is requested if you are chosen to borrow an instrument from the district.
If you are interested in borrowing an instrument from the Cambrian School District, please select "Borrow District Instrument" on the Band Registration Form. We do have instruments to loan, but unfortunately we never have enough for the demand. Checking off the box requesting a district instrument DOES NOT guarantee that you will receive a district instrument.

CADET BAND -
Cadet Band is our second year ensemble. It is a continuation of Beginning Band with more emphasis on performance. Our goal is to prepare the student for the culture and rigor of middle school band and beyond.
Enrollment is based on skills demonstrated through an audition or via satisfactory completion of Beginning Band and the ability to demonstrate the fundamental skills e.g. Reading, Tone Production, Rhythm, Posture, Articulation, Work Ethic, Behavior.
Sample skillset
Can read and play the first 6 notes from the Concert B Flat scale with appropriate articulation (tonguing, mallet grip, etc.)
Can read and play the following rhythms: quarter, half, dotted half, whole notes and rests and paired eighth notes (no dotted quarter rhythms yet)
Can produce a tone that is characteristic to their instrument.
Can demonstrate proper posture and instrument specific technique e.g. matched grip, seating, hand position, etc.
Students are expected to practice approximately 2 hours per week minimum.
Students are expected to manage their behavior so as not to interrupt rehearsal.
Additional performance opportunities
Winter Concert (December)
CMEA Band Festival (April)
Cambrian Kids Festival (TBA)
Cambrian District Band and Choir Festival: Wednesday, May 22nd 2024 @ Ida Price Gym 7:00pm

Practicing
Daily practice is essential and mandatory for any band student. Practice should be:
Consistent: Repetition is key to a student's success, practice should be part of their day.
Timely: We recommend working up to 30 minutes 5 days per week.
Relevant and worthwhile: Our teachers will assign appropriate weekly practice goals, i.e. homework
Private: A private practice space prevents distraction (for all parties!)
Learning an instrument is a balance between in class instruction and personal practice.
