California Science Teachers Association, California Science Education Conference

When? October 18, 2019-October 20,2019 Where? San Jose Convention Center, 150 W San Carlos St, San Jose, CA 95113

The goal of the California Science Education Conference is to give California science teachers an opportunity to grow professionally in order to improve student outcomes in and access to high-quality science education. Teachers participating in the conference accomplish this by participating in hands-on, minds-on 90-minute workshops led by teacher leaders, professional developers, and organizations who offer programs and services to support high-quality science teaching and learning.

Universal Design for Learning

When? September 5, 2019 Where? Tulare County Office of Education, 7000 Doe Ave, Visalia, CA 93291

(2 Day Event) This workshop dives deep into understanding the conceptual framework behind Universal Design for Learning. It is a day dedicated to the why and how of the framework. Explore the concept of learner variability and the connection between UDL, differentiation and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Walk away with an understanding of the purpose of UDL and how to break down barriers for all students, including English Learners and students with exceptional needs, to access learning.

This is also a great way to learn about ways to be involved in developing or providing input on these documents.

Instructional Resources Adoptions

The California Department of Education (CDE) and State Board of Education (SBE) are seeking reviewers to participate in the 2020 Health Education Instructional Materials Adoption. Reviewers will evaluate the instructional materials for alignment to the California Health Education Content Standards and for consistency with the guidance in the newly revised Health Education Curriculum Framework, utilizing the standards maps and evaluation criteria maps that have been approved by the SBE for this adoption. Some important dates in the process to remember are:

· April 21–24, 2020 Reviewer training held in Sacramento

· April–July 2020 Independent review of instructional materials

· July 20–24, 2020 Reconvene in panels per session assignment, again in Sacramento, for deliberations and the preparation of a report of findings

The online application is available on the CDE Health Education Instructional Materials web page athttps://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/he/im/. The deadline for submission of applications is July 24, 2019. Please forward this information to any and all qualified candidates who might be interested.

Model Curriculum Projects

The Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Advisory Committee has concluded the work of creating a draft version of the curriculum. The public comment period will begin in June and continue through August. Curriculum Frameworks

On May 8, 2019, the State Board of Education approved the 2019 Health Education Curriculum Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve as recommended to the board from the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC). The framework provides guidance for teachers and administrators on how to teach California’s 2008 Health Education Content Standards. Supplemental Instructional Resources for All Subjects

Have you been looking for supplemental resources for your classroom? Instructional materials used in California public schools must comply with Education Code sections 60040–60045 and 60048 as well as the SBE guidelines in Standards for Evaluating Instructional Materials for Social Content, 2013 Edition (DOC). The CDE maintains a searchable database of supplemental resources. Although these instructional materials are not adopted by the SBE, they have met the social content standards.
