Week 8- 5/18-22

Good morning!

This week students will learn about the risks and effects of vaping.

They will have 3 assignments as well as a quiz to take on what they learn. All of the assignments will be due on Friday.

Week 7- 5/11-5/15

Good morning! I hope you all had a blessed week and weekend.

This week students will continue learning about their skin. Specifically, they will learn about the 3 layers of skin, the functions of the integumentary system and the classifications of burns.

They have 4 short assignments to complete which will all be due on Friday. Please reach out to me if you or your student needs assistance in any way.

This week students will be learning about dermatology, melanoma (skin cancer) and how to protect themselves from the sun.

They will have 3 assignments to complete that will be due on Friday.

Week 5 - 4/27-5/1

Good morning! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

Governor Roy Cooper declared April "Tick and Mosqito Awareness Month" a few years ago related to the increase in vector born illness across the world, country and state. He initiated a "Fight the Bite" campaign to raise awareness.

Though COVID 19 is in the forefront of everyone's minds at this time, it is still important to remember there are many other ways that our health can be compromised. This week students will be learning about vector born illness, the "Fight the Bite" campaign and the 5 D's which are 5 ways to protect them from mosquitoes and ticks.

They will complete 3 assignments that will all be due on Friday.

Week 4 - 4/20-4/24

I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break!

This week students will have 3 assignments to complete. In connection to their study of World War II in Social Studies, they will be looking at the long term health effects of radiation exposure from atomic bombs.

Their first assignment will be to define terms related to oncology and write sentences with 5 of them.

The second assignment is to watch a 7 minute video about a study of atomic bomb survivors and radiation exposure. They will learn the connection of this study to our current knowledge of safe radiation levels and answer questions.

The third assignment is to watch a video about a day in the life of a pediatric oncologist and answer questions.

All assignments are due on Friday, April 24th and should be submitted on a google document through google classroom.

Week 3- 4/6-4/9

This week students will work on 3 assignments related to epidemiology (the study of disease and how it spreads). They will be looking at information to understand some of the words they are hearing on the news about COVID 19 or the corona virus. They will be learning vocabulary including epidemic and pandemic and will research information regarding the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and WHO (World Health Organization).

All assignments can be found on Google Classroom under classwork and will be answered on a Google Doc. Assignments will be due on Thursday of this week.

Week 2-3/30-4/3

I still have many students who have not joined my Google Classroom. Please check with your student to assure they have joined.

This week students will be learning about genetic disorders and what a genetic counselor's job involves along with 10 vocabulary terms. This correlates with what they have been learning in their science class.

Their assignments will be to watch short videos and answer questions on a google doc that I have included for them in Google Classroom. They will take a 10 question quiz on the vocabulary. All of the assignments will be due on Friday and should take them no more than 1- 1/2 hours to complete. ***If they take longer, please let me know***

Week 1-3/23-3/27

My class will be new for your student this nine weeks as they switch Encore classes every nine weeks. The assignments that they will complete for my class will be related to health, healthcare and may supplement the content they are learning in their core classes.

Your student should have received an invite from me to join my google classroom. Please assure that they have done this. I have many students that have; however, there are many that have not. I will post assignments on Mondays that will be due on Fridays. I am striving to make the total time for completion of assignments 1 to 1 1/2 hour of work per week.

The only assignment they will have this week is to send me a couple of sentences about them and what they have been doing since school has been out. They may send this as an email, a google document or a private comment on google classroom.

***If your student is a band student, they will not be required to participate in my class as they will be participating in band and PE. ***

Important Update: Your student may have realized they were removed from my google classroom. If they were a band student and already joined, I removed them. I do not want them to get confused and do more work than is required.
