Rationale
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) includes Career Development in the national school-counseling model. ASCA states that Career Development Standards “guide school counseling programs to help students 1) understand the connection between school and the world of work and 2) plan for and make a successful transition from school to postsecondary education and/or the world of work and from job to job across the life span.” The College Board Advocacy and Policy Center advocates for “early and ongoing exposure to experiences and information necessary to make informed decisions when selecting a college or career that connects to academic preparation and future aspirations.”
Career awareness focuses on developing attitudes that will foster a sense of responsibility and a desire for productivity. Involvement in career awareness seeks to instill in students a desire to develop the understanding, appreciation, abilities, and skills necessary for successful adjustment in a changing society. Career awareness is an ongoing process and provides the student with informational experiences representing the varied world of work. As a culminating activity and not an activity in isolation, a Career Fair is appropriate.
