Grade TK-2: "Growing Seeds of Independence"
Activity: Seed Planting and Growth Journal
Objective: Demonstrate the ability to observe and document the growth of a plant.
California State Standards:
- NGSS K-PS2-2 Analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.
Encourage students to create a journal tracking the growth of a planted seed. Discuss observations, measure growth, and relate it to external factors.
Grade 3-5: "Mission: Goal-Getter"
Activity: Personalized Learning Plan Poster
Objective: Develop a Personalized Learning Plan with academic goals.
California State Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
Students create a poster outlining their learning goals for the year, breaking them down into achievable steps. They present this to the family, discussing the purpose behind each goal.
Grade 6-8: "Minds in Motion"
Activity: Book Club and Critical Reflection
Objective: Demonstrate critical thinking through book discussions.

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly.
Students form a virtual book club, choose a novel, and discuss it weekly. They must present evidence supporting their interpretations and engage in constructive dialogues.
Grade 9-12: "Future Leaders Forum"
Activity: Research Project on Future Career Paths
Objective: Explore potential careers and set academic goals accordingly.
California State Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question.
Students select a career interest, research the necessary qualifications, and set academic goals aligning with their chosen path. They present their findings through a multimedia presentation.
Mackenzie followed the given rubric for her 5 paragraph essay. She payed special attention on the implementation of key elements that allowed her essay to be strong and self-directed.
Mason worked hard to write, edit and publish this writing sample. He also created the artwork to go along with it.
Kenslie has set a goal to grow in her understanding of rational numbers. She created a schedule for time spent on this particular concept and successfully reached her goal.
This student is very thorough in all of her work. She actively chooses to complete assignments as well as additional practice without being prompted. She is proud of her work, and always eager to share what she has accomplished. This sample is an example of independent work on IXL after she had already completed her subject workbooks for the day. In 40 minutes, she completed 177 questions with 95% accuracy in a variety of subjects.
The student's self-directed and motivated approach was evident in her completion of the density lab with chocolate bars for her chemistry class, highlighting her determination to excel and achieve academic success.
The student completed a project which consisted of researching interesting facts about various parts of the solar system. He then created a poster of this information and used it to share what he learned with his classmates.
Sophia demonstrated that she is motivated and self-directed in all that she does. She is willing to ask for help, and within hours she will have figured it out. In all that she does she has intrinsic motivation driving her learning process. In this sample, she brings her own personality into the chemistry brochure and you can see her feelings around the issue at hand.
This was a topic self-selected by the student and he excelled at demonstrating what he had learned.
The student had a hard time putting together his presentation from an essay that he had written. He took the initiative and sought help from his HQT to help him develop his essay and finalize his presentation. He took great pride in applying the feedback and turning in his presentation.
The student wrote descriptions and diagrams of cell organelles.
Jaylin has been setting goals to branch out in her Science learning. She is utilizing texts and online platforms to go beyond what is required in 7th Grade.
This student has a passion for skateboarding and would possibly like to do something in the future as a business. This sample exemplifies his motivation to do something entrepreneurial with something he enjoys doing.
