Grade TK-2: "Little Green Thumbs"
Activity: Miniature Garden Project
Objective: Instill responsibility and respect for the environment.
California State Standards:
- NGSS K-ESS3-3: Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.
Description: Students create miniature gardens, fostering a sense of responsibility for caring for living things and an understanding of environmental issues.
Grade 3-5: "Cultural Passport Adventure"
Activity: Cultural Exploration Journal
Objective: Develop respect and understanding for diverse cultures.
California State Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.7: Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
Description: Students create a cultural exploration journal, researching and documenting various aspects of different cultures to promote global awareness and respect.

Activity: Research and Debate
Objective: Engage in discussions on local and global issues with integrity and respect.

Description: Students research and debate local and global issues, emphasizing responsible and respectful discourse. This promotes civic engagement and critical thinking.
Grade 9-12: "Community Service Project"
Activity: Service Learning Initiative
Objective: Demonstrate responsibility by actively engaging in community service.
California State Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.1.D: Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views.
Description: Students initiate and execute a community service project, demonstrating responsibility and respect while addressing a local issue. This fosters a sense of civic duty.
This sample shows how students can make good choices to positively affect their community.
This student is showing how using solar energy from the sun helps our environment.
This student, along with a friend, decided to create a newspaper for their local enrichment and learning center. They wrote informative articles about both school and local city events. They printed copies and passed them out at their learning center! They also realized they made a mistake in a previous issue and printed a correction.
Student learned about recycling and how specifically recycling electronics can help gorillas because their homes are being destroyed to look for metals.

This second grade student is creating his own schedule for the day listing the academic activities that he is going to do. This shows responsibility because he is doing it himself and organizing his day and making school a priority.
This example fits both Responsible Citizens and Effective Communicators. My student, Evan Ho, has demonstrated these SLOs by taking responsibility into his own hands when it comes to submitting and sharing his work samples with me. Also, he always finds new and innovative ways to demonstrate his knowledge. I love that he is the one to submit his work to me and frequently emails me with updates about his learning.
