Schools in the Past

More than 100 years ago, schools were very different. They did not look like the ones today. In the 1800s, schools had one room. These schools were in the countryside. Many kids walked to school. They walked far. Inside, everyone sat in one classroom. There were kids in first grade. There were kids in eighth grade. And there were kids in between. One teacher taught them all. The teacher taught one or two grades. Other students worked on their own. Later the teacher taught the other grades.

Lunch and Recess

Students brought lunch to school. They carried lunch in buckets. They ate muffins and apples. They ate cheese sandwiches. Some ate sausages. After lunch, they played outside. Some kids liked to jump rope. Many of these old schools still exist. Some are town halls or churches. They show what school was like back then.
